The new power plant Datteln 4 is one of the most advanced hard coal-fired power stations worldwide. With a net efficiency of more than 45 per cent and a gross capacity of 1,100 megawatts, it is intended to replace the powerplant units 1 to 3. Designed for fast load changes, the plant is going to mostly produce traction current and besides will provide district heating to about 100,000 homes.
The natural draft cooling tower was placed on 36 pillars that are based on a foundation ring with driven concrete piles. Optimised for stability as well as resonant frequency, the wall slims down from 1 m at the bottom to 19 cm at a height of 178 m on the top.
